My tattoo and its story
My
tattoo

I have a hummingbird tattoo
on the left side of my body on my rips and I got it two and a half years ago in
Edmonton, Canada. I got this tattoo as a reminder of my year and my experiences
in Canada as they significantly changed my thinking. It was a great time in my
life, which I consider as a unique and important for providing me with a
different way to live my life than I got from growing up in the German
culture. Canada taught me to be more
relaxed and open to other people, especially strangers. So I went to a tattoo studio
in Edmonton to talk to a tattoo artist who would draw me five different
versions of the hummingbird flying and in different colors. Three weeks after I
paid my deposit and made my appointment. I was really nervous and afraid of the pain
before getting my tattoo. I was told that my rips are the most painful spot to
get a tattoo and I agree. It was a sharp pain as if somebody stabbed my with a
knife in my ribs and it burned like hell. I am apparently also a bleeder since
I was bleeding like hell after my tattoo artist just finished with the black
outline. The 7 or 8 needles with the color ink even hurt more. After 1 ½ hours
of getting the tattoo I was extremely tired and slept the whole day. After I
just had to wash the tattoo and cream it for 8 weeks and it was fine. Overall
it was worth the painJ!
I choose the hummingbird as
a motive as it symbolizes mainly joy and adaptability. It also stands for peace,
happiness, self-discovery and eternity. It has important meanings in some cultures
and is even worshiped for its extraordinary existence. However, in the first
place as the he tattoo is a memory and
a kind of personal memorial for my grandfather. Hummingbirds were his favorite
animals and he used to tell me about their extraordinary power of flight and
other stories. He contributed to a big part to my live as he influenced the way
I am and to a great extent the way I see and interpret the world. He provided
me with important values, especially the ones of being helpful and kind to man
and animal. My tattoo is a way to express myself and remind myself of where I
want to go. I want to be a good person as my grandfather was and have this tattoo
as a constant reminder of my goals and my personality J
